Steve Kim has played the bass for over 40 years and has been teaching since 1974. He has studied bass with Ray Brown, Gary Peacock and composition/improvisation with Charlie Banacos .
His performances include appearances with Larry Coryell, Alphonse Mouzon, Carter Jefferson, Dave Valentine, Jay Thomas, Scott Cossu, and Brian Nova as well as recordings with Scott Cossu , Van Manakas & Jim Brock, and Don Mock.
His commissions include compositions for the Southern Arts Council, the Seattle Arts Commission, choreographers Bill Evans, Clay Talefero and Jeff Bickford, and northwest filmmaker Eric Patton.
In 1987 he served as a cultural ambassador representing the City of Seattle in Kobe, Japan and in 1989 he was chosen by the State of Washington as a Centennial Artist during the year long Washington State Centennial Celebration. In 2007 he returned to Japan, touring with guitarist Brian Nova & Vibraphonist Kiyoko Ami.
Steve Kim has taught at Pacific Lutheran University , The National Guitar Workshop, The Experience Music Project, Roberts Music Institute , and Arts In Motion. He currently is associate faculty in the music department at Shoreline Community College, and adjunct faculty to South Seattle Community College.
His second solo recording, entitled The Book Of Changes, was released in the fall of 2005.
